BMW & MINI High Voltage Specialist

High Voltage Repairs for BMW & MINI Electric Vehicles

Uptown Motor Works is one of the few independent workshops in Melbourne's west with a qualified BMW/MINI High Voltage technician on the floor. From battery diagnostics to drivetrain repair, every job is carried out to dealer-level safety standards.

What We Handle

High Voltage & EV Service Capability

Every high voltage job is isolated, tested, and signed off using the same safety procedure used in BMW dealership workshops — de-energised, verified, then worked on.

HV battery diagnostics

Cell-level health checks, isolation fault tracing, insulation resistance testing, and state-of-health reporting using BMW's ISTA diagnostic platform.

Electric drivetrain repair

Service and repair of ASM, PSM, and SSM electric motor types across BMW's Gen 5 and Gen 6.0 EV platforms, including dual-motor xDrive configurations.

800V system service

Inverter, onboard charger, and DC-DC converter diagnostics for BMW's latest 800V architecture, plus charging port and connector fault repair.

HV battery pack work

Battery module inspection, coolant loop service for liquid-cooled packs, contactor replacement, and pack removal/refitting for major repairs.

Recalibration & coding

Post-repair recalibration of energy management and recuperation systems, software updates, and fault memory clearing via BMW Triage tooling.

EV & hybrid servicing

Scheduled servicing for BMW and MINI electric and plug-in hybrid models — brake fluid, coolant, cabin filters, and 12V auxiliary battery checks.

Our Process

How an HV Repair Is Handled

Isolation & safety lockout

The high voltage system is fully de-energised and locked out before any panel is removed, in line with manufacturer safety procedure.

Diagnostic scan

Full fault code read and live data analysis using BMW ISTA and Triage to pinpoint the exact source of the issue.

Component repair or replacement

Targeted repair to motor, battery pack, inverter, or charging components, using genuine or OE-equivalent BMW/MINI parts.

Recalibration & verification

Systems are recalibrated, fault memory cleared, and the vehicle re-tested under load before being signed off as safe to drive.

A note on high voltage safety

BMW and MINI EV systems operate at voltages that can be lethal if handled incorrectly. We don't recommend attempting any HV battery, motor, or charging system work without certified training and the correct PPE and isolation equipment. If you're experiencing an HV fault warning, drive cautiously to your nearest specialist or arrange a tow rather than continuing to operate the vehicle.

Common Questions

HV & EV Repair FAQ

Do you work on BMW and MINI EVs that are still under warranty?

Yes. We can carry out independent diagnostic work and many repairs without affecting your existing manufacturer warranty, in line with Australian Consumer Law. We'll always advise you if a particular repair is best handled through a dealership claim.

What's the difference between ASM, PSM, and SSM motors?

These refer to BMW's different electric motor designs — Asynchronous (ASM), Permanent magnet Synchronous (PSM), and Separately excited Synchronous (SSM) motors — each used across different BMW EV platforms and axle positions. We diagnose and service all three types.

Can you diagnose a reduced power or HV fault warning?

Yes. A full ISTA diagnostic scan will identify whether the fault is isolation-related, a battery cell imbalance, a motor fault, or a software issue, and we'll walk you through the findings before any repair work begins.

Do you replace HV battery packs or individual modules?

Where the pack design allows it, we can replace individual faulty modules rather than the entire pack, which is significantly more cost-effective. We'll confirm what's possible for your specific model after diagnostics.

Is it safe to keep driving with an HV warning light on?

It depends on the fault, but as a general rule we recommend minimising driving and booking a diagnostic scan as soon as possible. Some HV faults can cause the vehicle to enter reduced power mode without warning.
